The BlastPED system allows remote, centralised blasting (refer to Figure 1 for a BlastPED Operation Schematic). The BlastPED LF System operates off from a mine's Leaky Feeder Radio System, using an interface between the BlastPED software PC and the leaky feeder transmission system (headend) via a radio link.
BlastPED has been developed to eliminate the high cost of maintaining the integrity of underground blasting cables. By eliminating these cables, costs are reduced on maintenance and lost production due to misfires.
BlastPED has been designed with safety as a prime criteria. The BlastPED system has several levels of security. While the system is extremely secure, it is also simple to operate for the authorised personnel. The software is similar to the PED operating software, PEDCALL, therefore personnel do not need to learn a new system.
The actual BlastPED Receiver is easy to connect and operate. The user connects the firing cable, ensures the BlastPED has synchronised, then turns the key. It is then up to the PEDCALL operator to enter the ARM & BLAST command from security disk and transmit the messages, once the area has been cleared of personnel and permission received to fire.
The BlastPED is a one-way system, ie the remote exploder unit is a receiver only, as the close proximity of this receiver/exploder to the electric detonators (caps) precludes the use of the transmitting radio for safety reasons.
