Mine Site Technologies Selected for Proximity Detection Initiative in South Australia

Following extensive evaluation and trials of various options for vehicle proximity detection systems to be installed on its underground mining equipment, a major mining customer in South Australia has selected the Mine Site Technologies (MST) proximity detection solution for its underground vehicle and personnel proximity technologies initiative. Included in the solution is the use of Mine Site Technologies’ ICCL (Integrated Communications Cap Lamp) with integrated RFID tracking tag and text and emergency messaging technology – messaging is sent to mine personnel using Mine Site Technologies’ PED through-the-earth communications system.

A primary focus for the customer is the safety of their personnel. In a statement issued by the customer they highlighted the fact that “the goal of this particular project is decreasing vehicle to vehicle and vehicle to pedestrian interaction”. Through the implementation of Mine Site Technologies proximity detection and ICCL communications options, the customer focus is on improved safety of haul truck and loader operations near personnel, light vehicles, and other heavy vehicles. They will also collect the interaction data for ongoing risk identification and minimization. In addition, use of the ICCL provides several safety benefits including the use of PED paging which provides a second means of personnel notification in the event of an emergency.

Installation and implementation of the Mine SiteTechnologies proximity detection system commenced in early-2012 and will be completed for full implementation mid-year. Replacement of existing cap lamps with the new ICCL’s will coincide with the installation and implementation of the proximity detection equipment. All cap lamps, checking stations, operator and support training will be completed and all systems are to be operational mid-2012.

Lloyd Zenari, CEO of Mine Site Technologies, stated, “The customer’s selection of the Mine Site Technologies proximity solution is yet another acknowledgement of the effectiveness of our mining purposed communications and tracking solutions. We focus on providing solutions which enhance safety and productivity – the two top priorities of our customers worldwide.”

Mine Site Technologies acquires Nixon Communications

Mine communications leaders Mine Site Technologies Pty Ltd, a subsidiary of MST Global Holdings Pty Ltd,(“MST”), has acquired 100 per cent of the share capital of Nixon Communications (“Nixons”), a network and communications infrastructure provider to the mining, oil and gas, remote construction and Coal Seam Gas sectors.

Australian-based Mine Site Technologies is a leading international mining communications solutions provider specialising in developing, deploying and servicing communications hardware, software and systems for the industry. Its customers include many of the world’s largest mining companies, with MST systems installed in over 500 mines worldwide.

In planning to build the business further from a strongly growing base, MST raised growth capital from Macquarie Capital earlier this year, researching companies and technologies that could contribute to its growth. Building on MST’s underground mining strengths, the Nixons acquisition is a core element of MST’s ongoing development of its surface mining and resources business, substantially expanding its capabilities. Founder of Nixon Communications, John Nixon, will remain with the combined company for at least 18 months as an adviser and consultant. MST will continue to pursue its growth strategy both organically and through acquisitions.

For both companies’ customers, business will continue as usual, while they will increasingly benefit from the combined strengths of the merged companies. MST customers will soon be able to draw on Nixon’s expertise and resource pool in surface mining and pipeline communications.

Retaining its branding, management team and continuing to operate as usual, Nixons will become a key part of MST’s Australian Field Operations, headed by Christian Fischer, General Manager. CEO of MST, Lloyd Zenari said: “Nixons will continue to operate under its current name and retain its current autonomy, entrepreneurial character and flexibility, but now also benefits from the resources and critical mass of the expanded group, able to scale up for our customers without compromising responsiveness and service.”

Zenari said that in making the decision to join MST and Nixons, the cultural match between the two companies was very important. The fit is excellent in a number of key areas. Both MST and Nixons have a very strong safety focus, with field teams looking out for each others’ safety onsite in remote, often hazardous and difficult locations.

“The two businesses have very little overlap in their product set and customer base. We also share a long commitment to mining and adjacent sectors, developing fit-for-purpose services and products, and a focus on building the capability of our people” said Zenari.

Nixon Communications Founder and Managing Director John Nixon said that Mine Site Technologies and Nixon have complementary businesses, technologies and culture that now combine to create a strong merged company. “Nixons will benefit from MST’s underground mining communications strengths and international market leadership in that sector, while we will contribute our leading experience and expertise in surface mining and pipeline communications to MST’s customers both in Australia and internationally. We look forward to starting to work together to develop business and opportunities.”

“There are significant opportunities for both businesses and for our skilled people to collaborate and for Nixons to now grow our business outside of our core Queensland market, both around Australia and internationally.”

MinePhone & NS40 Access Point Achieve ATEX Approval

Mine Site Technologies, Sydney, N.S.W., Australia has confirmed that its MinePhone VoIP digital phone and NS40 Wireless Access Point for integrated underground mining communications have achieved ATEX certification, Group 1 Category M1. ATEX (Appareils destinés à être utilisés en Atmosphères Explosibles) certification is for equipment and protective systems which are to be used in potentially explosive atmospheres. It is the certification standard for the European Union. This certification is a confirmation of the equipments’ I.S. Intrinsically Safe) nature and certifies that it can be safely used in the environments found in underground coal mines. Formal testing of the MinePhone and NS40 was carried out by DEKRA-EXAM of Germany.

According to the EU, “A potentially explosive atmosphere is composed of mixtures of gases, vapours, mists or dusts, which can ignite under certain operating conditions.” All equipment used in these environments must be intrinsically safe (I.S.) insuring that they cannot create a spark.

Lloyd Zenari, CEO, announced, “These approvals open a new door of opportunity for Mine Site Technologies in Europe, with the installation of these technologies now being progressed in mines in Germany, Poland and Russia . We make modern and fit-for-purpose technologies vailable to our customers with a focus on enhancing safety and productivity through applied technology. We provide the opportunity for increasing productivity – safely”

Mine Site Technologies’ PED & ICCL Receive India I.S. Certification

Mine Site Technologies, Sydney, N.S.W., Australia announced today (November 8, 2011) that their PED (Personal Emergency Device) and ICCL (Integrated Communications Cap Lamp) products have received the India Coal Mine I.S. (Intrinsically Safe) certification. This certification opens the door for India coal mines to use the PED and ICCL systems which are considered to be two of the most reliable and effective emergency and general communications systems available to the modern underground mining industry.

The PED system uses a proprietary ultra-low frequency signal to transmit text messages through solid rock – “through the earth” technology.  The transmission system can be installed on the surface to send a signal to miners who are working underground, regardless of their location. Installation on the surface means that PED is less vulnerable to the day-to-day rigors of the underground mining environment, which adds to its reliability and supports keeping maintenance costs to a minimum. Messages can be sent to individuals, select groups of
workers, or, in the case of an emergency, all employees underground.

The ICCL serves as a multi-functional receiver which displays the text messages issued through PED on an integrated screen. In addition when a message is received the wearer is alerted through both audible and visual (flashing cap lamp light) signals.

The PED/ICCL combination complements other phone and radio communications systems that may already be installed in a mine. In fact, many mines have installed PED as their primary emergency evacuation alert system and as a redundant emergency system to complement their other underground communications systems which may be damaged, and become inoperable, in an incident underground.

Mike Foletti, General Manager – International, noted, “This accomplishment has taken several years to fulfil. Our customers in India have been waiting to have the opportunity to apply the PED technology and we are now actively pursuing orders and installations.”
