Colombian miner goes digital in their underground mines

Wireless Network Switches form the heart of the underground IP Network

MTC-Coexminas operates two emerald mines in Colombia, Puerto Arturo and Tequendama mines. The mines had had very poor visibility and communications to the underground operations and as the mines are expanding rapidly, they wanted to identify suitable technology to meet the needs. They have ordered an ImPact Digital Network for the two underground mines. The initial systems cover key areas underground and then will be expanded over time.Being gem mines security has always been an issue, so MTC Coexminas assessed the mines’ operating systems and identified the security benefits to be gained by:
- Tracking the movement of the emerald load buggies and miners underground.
- Video monitoring of key locations
- Improved two-way mobile communications throughout the underground areas.It is these key applications that the ImPact Digital Network provides the communication backbone for.MST was chosen because such a remote site demanded high reliability as access is predominantly via helicopters and hence expensive to bring in maintenance personnel.
