TWENTY MILE COAL MINE INSTALL PED FOR PRODUCTIVITY & SAFETY
MINE: TWENTY MILE
OWNER: CYPRUS
TYPE: COAL
LOCATION: COLORADO, USA
BACKGROUND
Twenty Mile has been consistently the highest productivity underground coal mine in the world. To maintain this record staff are instantly assessing technologies that can lead to improvement in their already world class performance. Improved communications were seen as a way to achieve this, and PED was identified as the best system to improve overall communications. The mine wide signal coverage of PED was also seen as providing very effective emergency warning capability.
COMPOSITION
The transmission system consists of a single transmitter powering a 7km (3 mile) underground loop antenna. 100 BeltPED Personal Receivers.
DESCRIPTION
The single underground antenna is installed in the main development drives only. The signal radiates off the loop antenna into the longwall panels to achieve mine wide coverage. The BeltPEDs are primarily utilised by supervisors & maintenance personnel.
JUSTIFICATION
Twenty Mile justified the system on the need to contact personnel quickly & reliably to improve productivity and safety. The success of PED installations at several mines in neighbouring Utah gave the mine confidence that it would meet all their requirements.
