SUFCO COAL MINE INSTALL PED TO IMPROVE OVERALL COMMUNICATIONS
MINE: SUFCO
OWNER: SUFCO COAL
TYPE: COAL
LOCATION: UTAH, USA
BACKGROUND
Sufco is one of the most productive mines in the US, producing around 7 mt of coal a year. To maintain this high productivity mine management assess technologies that can lead to improvement. Communications were seen as one area that could be improved, and PED was identified as the best system to enhance overall communi-cations and complement their existing phone and data systems. The mine wide signal coverage of PED was also seen as providing very effective emergency warning capability.
COMPOSITION
This large mine has main developments running 14 km into the mine. To give signal coverage to all roadways into the mine and the longwall blocks, two transmitters powering two 4 km underground antennas used. 100 BeltPED Personal Receivers.
DESCRIPTION
The underground antennas are installed in the main development drives only. The signal radiates off the loop antenna into the longwall panels to achieve mine wide coverage. The BeltPEDs are primarily utilised by supervisors & maintenance personnel.
JUSTIFICATION
Sufco justified the system on the need to contact personnel quickly & reliably to improve productivity and safety. The success of PED installations at several other mines in Utah gave the mine confidence that PED would meet all their requirements.
