BACKGROUND
Blacksville is a Consol Mine on the border between West Virginia and Pennsylvania. Consol has a group commitment to safety and, with the success of other systems in the US, it was decided to install a system at one of their mines. Blacksville was chosen as mine management there identified the potential costs benefits of a mine wide communication system, in addition to any safety benefits received from PED’s emergency warning capability.
COMPOSITION
This older, large mine has main developments running 8 km into the mine in one direction and 6km in another direction. The system has been set up with one underground antenna to give signal coverage to all roadways into the mine and the longwall blocks. 50 BeltPED Personal Receivers initially, to build up to approx. 200.
DESCRIPTION
The underground antenna is installed in the main development drives only. The signal radiates off the loop antenna into the longwall panels to achieve mine wide coverage. The BeltPEDs are primarily utilised by Supervisors, maintenance personnel and beltmen.
JUSTIFICATION
Blacksville justified the system on the need to contact personnel quickly & reliably. The success of PED installations at other mines in the US gave the mine confidence that PED would meet their requirements.
