INSTALL PED FOR SAFETY & PRODUCTIVITY
MINE: ANDALEX
OWNER: ANDALEX RESOURCES
TYPE: COAL
LOCATION: UTAH, USA
BACKGROUND
Improved communications were seen as essential to achieving the levels of safety and productivity Andalex were aiming for. PED was installed because its broad signal coverage would best complement the existing phone system at the mine.
COMPOSITION
The transmission system consists of a single transmitter powering a 6km (3.8 mile) underground loop antenna. 35 BeltPED Personal Receivers, initially.
DESCRIPTION
The single underground antenna is installed in the main development drives only. The signal radiates off the loop antenna into the longwall panels to achieve mine wide coverage. The transmitter is installed underground and connected via twisted pairs to the PC located in the mine control office. The BeltPEDs are primarily utilised by supervisors & maintenance personnel.
JUSTIFICATION
Andalex justified the system on the need to contact personnel quickly & reliably. This was important, as their mining method required a reliable emergency communication system to be place. PED was chosen as it met these criteria, and was well proven at other mines in Utah.
